Practice of Integrated Application of Aluminum Panel Interior and Exterior Cladding in Large-Scale Public Buildings in Shenzhen Sports Center
Project Type
Large public sports building / City-level public space
Project Location
Shenzhen Sports Center
Project Background
As a city-level public sports building, the renovation and transformation of Shenzhen Sports Center are not only about functional enhancement but also carry multiple requirements such as public space quality, city image, and long-term operation and maintenance.
In terms of overall design strategy, the project adopts a highly unified white system and continuous curved surface language, presenting a flowing, flexible city sculpture externally, while internally shifting towards minimalist, restrained, and highly ordered space expression.
Under this design orientation, aluminum panels are no longer just surface materials but become an important interface system connecting structure, MEP, and spatial order.

Exterior Aluminum Panels: System Control Under Continuous Curves
Facade Design Features
The exterior of Shenzhen Sports Center uses a large-area curved aluminum panel system, presenting an overall flowing, soft city sculpture effect with the following prominent features:
- Large-scale continuous curved surface
- High-density vertical rhythm
- Unified white surface with extremely high flatness requirements
- Huge building volume with strict requirements for wind pressure resistance and structural stability
Construction Challenges of Exterior Cladding
The core challenge of exterior aluminum panels is not the processing of individual panels but controlling the overall curvature continuity and visual integrity, mainly reflected in:
- Curvature connection of hyperbolic or quasi-hyperbolic aluminum panels
- Stable expression of shadow joints on curved surfaces
- Amplification effects of white surface on "oil tank effect" and micro-deformations
- Control of error accumulation in sectional installation of large-volume buildings
- This part is more of a comprehensive test of mature engineering experience and systematic processing capabilities.

Interior Aluminum Panels: The True Technical Core of the Project
Compared to the exterior, the interior aluminum panel system in Shenzhen Sports Center has significantly higher technical complexity and is the most challenging part of the entire project.
- Massive cylindrical cladding system
- Multiple ultra-large diameter structural columns distributed inside the venue, with design requirements:
- Pure white aluminum panel cladding
- Extremely high flatness
- Weakening of panel joints to visually approach an integrated effect
Technical Difficulties
- The large diameter of the columns prevents the use of full panels for forming
- The panel size must balance between "structural reasonableness" and "visual continuity"
- Joints must follow the overall order rather than construction convenience
- High requirements for processing accuracy and on-site installation precision
- This system is essentially a highly customized curved surface interior aluminum panel system, requiring complete layout and node logic deduction during the deepening stage.

The core challenges are:
- Maintaining absolute straightness of vertical lines in curved walls
- Joint logic must be consistent with the overall spatial axes
- Integrating lighting strips, inspection ports, MEP reservations, and other functional requirements
- The interior wall aluminum panels must be designed in advance; otherwise, any later MEP adjustments could disrupt the overall order.
The Role of Aluminum Experts in the Project
In Shenzhen Sports Center, the aluminum team deeply participated in the deepening and implementation of interior and exterior aluminum panel systems, focusing on:
- Deepening design of curved aluminum panel systems
- High flatness aluminum panel solutions for interiors
- Layout and node control for large public buildings
- Coordination of aluminum panel systems with MEP, lighting, and fire systems
- Practical experience shows that aluminum panels in such public buildings are no longer just "post-installation decoration" but a system engineering that must be involved from the design stage.
Project Summary
The Shenzhen Sports Center project, with aluminum panels as the core interface material, achieved:
- City image shaping under continuous exterior curves
- Refined engineering control in high-order interior spaces
- High integration of structure, MEP, and decoration systems
- This project further demonstrates that what truly determines project quality is not whether the exterior is "eye-catching" but whether the interior can "stand the test of engineering scrutiny".
